چکیده

Exposure, as well as toxicity, determines whether rodenticides present real environmental hazards to nontarget animals. In order to combine exposure and toxicity, a compartment model is proposed which distinguishes transfer processes from accumulation of residues. The published literature relevant to the model is analysed, and some important gaps in knowledge are highlighted. Simple sub-models of rat feeding behaviour and mortality are combined into a simulation model which generates data on both efficacy of control and build-up of residues in live rats and carcases. The roles of feeding parameters (e.g., palatability, availability of alternative food) as well as toxicity are emphasised by the simulation results. Proc. 14th Vertebr. Pest Conf. (L.R. Davis and R.E. Marsh, Eds.) Published at Univ. of Calif., Davis. 1990.

Rodenticide Ecotoxicology: Pre-lethal Effects of Anticoagulants on Rat Behaviour

Anticoagulant rodenticides may pose a secondary poisoning hazard to non-target predators and scavengers because of the time-delay between ingestion of a lethal dose and death of a target rodent. We investigated some pre-lethal effects of an anticoagulant rodenticide on the behaviour of wild rats in cages and in enclosures. We found that social interactions shortened time to death, that most rat...

Acute toxicity of diphacinone in Northern bobwhite: effects on survival and blood clotting.

The anticoagulant rodenticide diphacinone was slightly toxic (acute oral LD50 2014 mg/kg) to Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) in a 14-day acute toxicity trial. Precise and sensitive assays of blood clotting (prothrombin time, Russell's Viper venom time, and thrombin clotting time) were adapted for use in quail, and this combination of assays is recommended to measure the effects of antic...

Evaluation of Rodenticide Poisoning Distribution Based on Demographic Characteristic, Poisons, Causes of Intoxication, Duration of Hospitalization and Mortality Rate

Introduction: Due to dissimilarities in the availability of poisons in different areas and lack of enough control over the purchase and sale of some dangerous rodenticides, it is prudent to establish the distribution of rodenticide poisoning in each region. Therefore, this study was performed to evaluate the demographic factors, types of poisons, duration of hospitalization and mortality of pat...

Reliability analysis of repairable systems using system dynamics modeling and simulation

Repairable standby system’s study and analysis is an important topic in reliability. Analytical techniques become very complicated and unrealistic especially for modern complex systems. There have been attempts in the literature to evolve more realistic techniques using simulation approach for reliability analysis of systems. This paper proposes a hybrid approach called as Markov system ...

Toxicity reference values for chlorophacinone and their application for assessing anticoagulant rodenticide risk to raptors.

Despite widespread use and benefit, there are growing concerns regarding hazards of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides to non-target wildlife which may result in expanded use of first-generation compounds, including chlorophacinone (CPN). The toxicity of CPN over a 7-day exposure period was investigated in American kestrels (Falco sparverius) fed either rat tissue mechanically-amended...
